Federal Reserve Reduces Borrowing Costs for Second Instance This Calendar Year During Economic Uncertainty

The US monetary authority lowered interest rates on midweek, marking the second reduction this year during financial volatility originating from the government closure and tariff policies.

Decision Arrives at Extraordinary Time for Federal Reserve

The move to cut the key rate by a quarter point to a span of 3.75% to 4% arrives at an unprecedented juncture for the Fed. The institution has been under significant strain to lower borrowing costs even with persistent inflation.

Central Bank Announcement Notes Job Market Changes

In a statement, the Fed said that the jobless rate had increased but remains low. “Employment growth have decelerated,” the statement reads. “Price increases has risen and remains somewhat elevated.”

Government Shutdown Complicates Central Bank’s Task

The continuing federal government shutdown, now one of the longest in US history, has also complicated the Fed’s job. Collection of important economic data has been indefinitely halted as staff at the Bureau of Labor Statistics are furloughed during the closure.

Information Shortage Affects Monetary Moves

The Federal Reserve usually studies labor statistics to assess employment trends, including the number of employment gains added to the market and the present jobless percentage. The most recent employment data was released in early September, before the shutdown, and provided a somewhat gloomy overview of the jobs market in the previous month.

The figure of jobs created to the market in the summer month was down by more than 100,000 since the spring, and joblessness crept up to 4.3% – the peak since three years ago.

Private Data Show Continued Decline

Though BLS was scheduled to release last month’s job market report in early October, it halted its release when the shutdown started. Private payroll firm a leading payroll processor indicated recently that the private sector cut 32,000 positions in September, a sign that the employment landscape is still decelerating.

“Both the supply and demand for workers has declined quite sharply,” Fed chair the Fed chairman said recently, a trend he had earlier said comes from trade and immigration measures.

Inflation Report Reveals Gradual Increase

Though the bureau’s employment data has been paused, the bureau still issued its inflation report for September that showed that prices are going up, although slowly. Costs increased 3% over the last year, the highest since the start of the year. In April, the yearly price increase was 2.3%, the minimum it has been since 2021. The central bank’s goal inflation rate is 2%.
